Stones and Crystals
The following stones and crystals are a some of the most popular of the many available.
All stones and crystals should be cleansed and charged before use. This is usually achieved by placing the stone or crystal in pure running water, such as a stream, for anything between a few minutes to a few days. Some disciplines dictate that they should be cleansed with each of the four elements in turn, fire being very brief to prevent physical damage to the stone or crystal. The process of charging will depend upon your personal preferences, some people will use sunlight, others will uses moonlight. Both methods however, involve placing the stone or crystal in the chosen light source for a period of time. As a general rule of thumb, the denser the material is, the greater the amount of cleansing and charging time required.
Agate
Powers & Magickal uses: Strength, Courage, Longevity, Gardening, Love, Healing, Protection.
Banded Agate:
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Used for protection, to restore energy within the body and relieve stress.
Black Agate:
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Used for protection, worn to enhance personal courage and aid success in competitional endeavours.
Black & White Agate:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Earth.
Used as an amulet to guard against physical dangers.
Blue Agate:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used as an amulet to promote peace and happiness. Can be used to de-stress yourself by holding in your hand.
Brown (tawny) Agate:
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Used as an amulet to aid success in virtually any undertaking, can also be used as a wealth talisman.
Green Agate:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Earth.
Used to promote healthy eyesight.
Moss Agate:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Earth.
Used as a talisman by gardeners to ensure "green fingers". It is also used for the relief of aches and pains, especially neck ache.
Red Agate (Blood agate):
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Used to promote calm and inner peace, it can also be used to heal the blood and guard against insect bites.
Amazonite
Powers & Magickal uses: Gambling, Success, Auric healing.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Earth.
Used to attract money and bring good luck, hence the gambling connection. It is also widely used to heal emotional problems and to mend the aura.
Amber
Powers & Magickal uses: Luck, Healing, Strength, Protection, Beauty, Love.
Energy type: Projective. Associated elements: Fire, Spirit.
Amber is neither a gemstone nor a crystal, but is fossilized resin of pine trees, as such it frequently contains insects, and is therefore seen as a giver of life energy. Amber also represents the Goddess or Great Mother, and is sometimes worn by Witches in a necklace of alternating amber and jet (representing the God) beads. It is used to enhance magickal ability and to ward off negativity, whether it is within your own spells or of those directed against you.
Be wary of being fobbed off with imitation amber. Fake amber it is made of glass or plastic, true amber is warm to the touch, smells slightly of pear drops, and produces a sweet smelling smoke if you push a hot pin into it (plastic smells pungent and acidic).
Amethyst
Powers & Magical uses: Dreams, Overcoming Alcoholism, Healing, Psychism, Peace, Love, Protection against theft, Courage, Happiness.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Use to prevent insomnia and nightmares by sleeping with a piece of amethyst under your pillow. It is a reducer of stress, so it can be used to great effect in today's pressured lifestyle. Use amethyst to calm fears, raise hopes, and enhance spirituality. Amethyst can also be used to enhance psychic abilities, and aid meditation.
An all round gemstone that you should not be without.
Aquamarine
Pale bluey-green stone.
Powers & Magickal uses: Psychism, Peace, Courage, Purification.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used to purify the body before ritual, as a protective amulet when travelling over water, to sooth emotional problems, and to enhance the use of psychic powers.
Aventurine
Powers & Magickal uses: Mental Powers, Eyesight, Gambling, Money, Peace, Healing, Luck.
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Air.
Worn as an amulet to improve eyesight, increase perception, and to enhance intelligence. Gamblers also use it as a lucky talisman (keep your lottery ticket under a piece of aventurine!).
Azurite
Powers & Magickal uses: Psychism, Dreams, Divination, Healing.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used to increase psychic powers. Place a piece beneath your pillow at night for revelational dreams! It is also useful as and aid during divination.
Bloodstone
Greenish stone with red spots.
Powers & Magickal uses: Halting bleeding, Healing, Victory, Courage, Wealth, Strength, Power, Legal matters, Business, Agriculture.
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Used in ancient times by soldiers to stem the flow of blood, this stone has blood-healing properties. It can also be used in spells associated with wealth and business/legal matters, and as a talisman to increase crop yield.
Calcite
Powers & Magickal uses: Spirituality, Centring, Peace, Love, Healing, Purification, Money, Protection, Energy.
Clear Calcite:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used as a meditation focal point.
Pink Calcite:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used for centring and grounding, and for love rituals.
Blue Calcite:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used for purification.
Green Calcite:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Earth.
Used for financial prosperity.
Orange Calcite:
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Used to promote protective energy.
Carnelian
Powers & Magickal uses: Protection, Peace, Eloquence, Healing, Courage, Sexual energy.
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Worn to calm anger and aggression, also to give courage when speaking in public. It is used to help prevent others from reading your mind, to strengthen astral vision, and to increase sexual desires.
Chrysocolla
Powers & Magickal uses: Peace, Wisdom, Love.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used to sooth the emotions, and promote loving relationships.
Citrine
Powers & Magickal uses: Nightmare prevention, Protection, Psychism.
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Used to prevent nightmares and promote quality sleep. It is also used to enhance psychic ability, and to increase self-esteem.
Fluorite
Powers & Magickal uses: Mental powers, Meditation.
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: none.
Used to increase the mental faculties, and as a strengthener to increase the power of other stones. It can also be used to promote inner peace whilst meditating.
Haematite
Powers &Magickal uses: Healing, Grounding, Divination.
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Iron Pyrite (Fools gold)
Powers & Magickal uses: Healing, addiction, strengthening of the will.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Earth.
Used by crystal healers to help with addiction problems and lung/breathing complaints. This stone was used by Mexican Indians to produce magic mirrors.
Jasper
Powers & Magickal uses: Healing, Protection, Health, Beauty.
Red Jasper:
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Used to return negative energy to the sender.
Green Jasper:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Earth.
Used as a health talisman, and to promote quality sleep.
Brown Jasper:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Earth.
Used for centring and grounding after magickal rituals.
Mottled Jasper:
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Air.
Used for protection against drowning.
Jet
Black fossilised wood, sometime called Witches' amber.
Powers & Magickal uses: Protection, Anti-nightmare, Luck, Divination, Health.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated elements: Earth, Spirit.
Used to absorb negative energies, to prevent nightmares, and to aid divination. Witches sometimes wear it in a necklace of alternating amber (representing the Goddess) and jet beads.
Lapis Lazuli
Rare and expensive blue stone with gold flecks.
Powers & Magickal uses: Healing, Joy, Love, Fidelity, Psychic, Protection, Courage.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Malachite
Powers & Magickal uses: Power, Protection, Love, Peace, Business success.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Earth.
Used to increase your sending power during rituals.
Obsidian
Powers & Magickal uses: Protection, Grounding, Divination, Peace.
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Often cut into polished flat sheets for use as a scrying mirror.
Onyx
Powers & Magickal uses: Protection, Defensive magick, Reducing sexual desires.
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Be wary of having too much onyx in the house as it can reduce your sexual desires to a dangerously low level, thus preventing the natural release of emotional energies.
Quartz
Powers & Magickal uses: Protection, Healing, Psychism, Power, Lactation.
Pure (Clear) Quartz:
Energy types: Receptive, Projective. Associated elements: Water, Fire.
Used to unblock energy centres and aid the body's natural healing process. It is also used in the tips to wands, as a scrying tool, and as representations of the God & Goddess on the altar. There however hundreds of other uses for this versatile crystal.
Blue Quartz:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used to promote peace and tranquillity.
Green Quartz:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used to increase wealth.
Rose Quartz:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used to open the heart chakra, and to promote peace and harmony.
Rutilated Quartz:
Energy type: Projective. Associated element: Fire.
Used to increase personal energy during rituals.
Smokey Quartz:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used for grounding, and to overcome depression.
Tourmalated Quartz:
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used to aid astral projection if placed under the pillow at night.
Ruby
Deep red crystal, similar to quartz. Quality ruby is very expensive.

Can be used for scrying, attracting wealth, and promoting happiness.
Sodalite
Powers & Magickal uses: Healing, Peace, Meditation, Wisdom.

Used to reduce stress levels and lower blood pressure.
Sugilite
Powers & Magickal uses: Psychism, Spirituality, Healing, Wisdom.
Energy type: Receptive. Associated element: Water.
Used during meditation to increase spiritual awareness.
Tigers Eye

Used to increase self-confidence, and to counteract stress related problems.
Tourmaline

Red Tourmaline:

Every time I'm preparing myself afor a spell I look through this book, triple checking that I have the correct stones for the job at hand. I also found the color section at the beginning very useful. The only bit of criticism I have is that there weren't very many actual spells in the book but if you're just looking for help with making your own spells then this is the book for you!
